First off, the fabric needs to be thoroughly cleaned. Any dirt, grease, or other impurities on the fabric can prevent the dye from bonding properly. We usually use a mild detergent to wash the fabric and then rinse it several times to make sure all the soap is gone.
After that, the fabric might need to be pre – treated. This can involve things like bleaching or mercerizing. Bleaching can help remove any natural color in the fabric, making it easier for the dye to show up vividly. Mercerizing, on the other hand, can improve the fabric’s strength and its ability to absorb the dye.
Step 2: Preparing the Dye Bath
Now that the fabric is ready, it’s time to make the dye bath. The dye bath is basically a solution where we’re gonna immerse the fabric to get it dyed.
We start by weighing out the right amount of reactive dye. The amount depends on how much fabric we’re dyeing and how intense we want the color to be. Then we dissolve the dye in a small amount of warm water. This helps to make sure the dye dissolves evenly.
Next, we add some chemicals to the dye bath. One of the most important chemicals is an electrolyte, usually sodium chloride or sodium sulfate. The electrolyte helps to drive the dye onto the fabric. It reduces the negative charge on the fabric fibers, making it easier for the positively charged dye molecules to get closer and bond.
We also add an alkali, such as sodium carbonate. The alkali is crucial because it activates the reactive groups in the dye, allowing them to form a covalent bond with the fabric fibers. The pH of the dye bath is usually kept between 10 – 11 during this process.
Step 3: Dyeing the Fabric
Once the dye bath is ready, we slowly lower the pre – treated fabric into it. It’s important to make sure the fabric is fully submerged, and we usually stir it gently to ensure even dyeing.
The dyeing process usually takes some time. It can range from 30 minutes to a few hours, depending on the type of fabric, the dye, and the desired color intensity. During this time, the dye molecules start to diffuse into the fabric fibers. The electrolyte in the dye bath helps to speed up this diffusion process.
As the dye molecules get closer to the fabric fibers, the alkali in the dye bath activates the reactive groups in the dye. These reactive groups then react with the functional groups on the fabric fibers, forming a covalent bond. This is the key step that makes reactive dyes so great in terms of color fastness.
Step 4: Fixing the Dye
After the fabric has been in the dye bath for the right amount of time, we need to fix the dye. Fixing the dye means making sure the covalent bonds between the dye and the fabric fibers are fully formed and stable.
We usually do this by raising the temperature of the dye bath. Increasing the temperature speeds up the reaction between the dye and the fabric fibers, ensuring a better bond. The temperature can be raised to around 60 – 80 degrees Celsius, depending on the type of reactive dye and fabric.
We also hold the fabric at this elevated temperature for a certain period, usually around 20 – 30 minutes. This gives the reaction enough time to complete.
Step 5: Washing off the Excess Dye
Once the dye is fixed, the fabric is full of excess dye and chemicals that we need to get rid of. So, we start by rinsing the fabric with cold water. This helps to remove some of the loose dye.
Then we give the fabric a hot water wash. We use a detergent in this hot water wash to help break down and remove any remaining unfixed dye and chemicals. This step is really important because if there’s any excess dye left on the fabric, it can rub off or fade over time.
After the hot water wash, we give the fabric a final rinse with cold water to remove any soap residue. And that’s it! The fabric is now dyed with reactive dyes and ready to be used.

Now, you might be wondering why reactive dyes are so popular. Well, there are a few reasons.
First of all, as I mentioned earlier, they have excellent color fastness. Because they form a covalent bond with the fabric fibers, the color stays vibrant and doesn’t fade easily. This is great for things like clothing and home textiles that will be washed and used frequently.
